Claudine’s CV (Not quite), January 2016.
This TEDx talk reaffirmed my Jill-of-Multiple-Trades-ness. And for that, I’ve learned to embraced the assortment of my specialities and interests over the past few years.
My passion has always been design, which started way back when I was a child, creating things in Microsoft Publisher, MS Paint, and Netscape Composer, among other things.
I finished college with a degree in Communication Arts. It exposed me to video production and collaboration. My favorite classes back then were film photography, publishing for web, and video editing (I aced all three). During my free time, I would either sing in a pop group or do design and editorial work for a school publication.
My first job out of college was as an accounts executive in a small ad firm. I stayed only for a month, mainly because the itch to create design work never really left. It did pay me enough to buy a graduation dress. After this stint, I was given a chance to interview personalities and write a book about them with a friend for a beauty brand and a major publishing house.
I’ve worked on numerous design projects, both as a freelancer and as part of a company. Through the years, I realized that the thing that really gets me excited is solving problems. I have always tackled challenges and used visual design to address them. My work has then taken the form of something functional, beyond just being pretty. Because of this, I started focusing on more branding projects. My first two jobs are proof of that.
“It’s not just what it looks and feels like. Design is how it works,” said Steve Jobs. And I agree.
Being inspired by the startup community here in Manila, I recently co-founded a product development studio with the intention of building things with design and code that hopefully (fingers crossed) help people. One of our projects now is a coding school, built to encourage people to make things. This excitement towards building things with code led me to organize an agency hackathon.
In my life now, design is part of every single step of the creation process, from planning to execution. The projects I now work on are just about anything, from staging classes to creating a website, to consulting for a brand, to handlettering, but mostly being there from the start to finish. I just love seeing things through.
I love working with creative people who give more value to the creation process than just selling an idea. The so-called ‘doers’ are my favorite people on this planet, and they inspire me. I love making things happen so much that I also willingly work on things for free (note: not spec work), for organizations that support causes I truly believe in.
